Navigo Sat Nav Hacking with TomTom, MioMap & iGo

Last year I bought a Navigo satnav from ebuyer for about £45 for our epic road trip across America. For £40 I got the Navigo V3 sat nat unit, the windscreen mount and a car charger. I bought a little carry case also for a few quid and then set about hacking it.

With very little effort I got it running TomTom 6 (from the SD card) and then as well as the full UK maps I also got the Canadian and US maps and also the South African maps running on there too. TomTom is great, very easy to use and with full UK postcode searching it was a winner.

However, later this year I’m off to Greece for my sister’s wedding, but, although I can get TomTom maps for eastern Europe, It appears that there aren’t any that are compatible with V6 and so I needed to either upgrade the version of Tomtom on my Navigo or use some different sat nav software.

After much searching and trying various things, I finally got hold of a copy “Navigo V2 Menu” (just do a quick search for that in your favourite torrent website, it’s about 584MB), you might , for example, want to look here (but I obviously don’t condone that).

The instructions are very simple:

================================
ABOUT THE NAVIGO V2 MENU SYSTEM
================================

This menu is a modified version of SystemInformation which is a powerful and free menu system by Daniel Schumann. Modified to work on Navigo V2 by badbob (gpsmodding.com). Modified further and simplified by Cryptix (thepctailor.com) who also created this installation and information file.

The Navigo V2 Menu System is for the V2 GPS unit and doesn’t affect the default menu, it runs once the “Navigation” button is pressed, and acts as an extra menu which you can then select what GPS Navigation software you wish to use, access applications, games and more.

The Menu System could also work on the V1 with a bit of tweaking of the Shell and .ini Menu files.

HOW TO INSTALL
==============

1) Backup any files on your SD card to your computer, then delete everything off the SD card so it is blank.
2) Copy the contents of the “COPY CONTENTS TO ROOT OF C DRIVE” folder to C:\ directory on your computer. (This you’ll need later to activate TomTom 7)
3) Copy the contents of the “COPY CONTENTS TO ROOT OF SD CARD” folder to the SD Card. (This installs the menu and all the software / applications etc.)

That’s the menu installed correctly! (Accessed by clicking “Navigation” on the Navigo)

Now follow the instructions below to get TomTom 7, and iGo 8 running correctly for your Navigo: (MioMap 3.3 will be working correctly already)

======================================================
***SETTING UP TOMTOM 7 ON THE NAVIGO V2 MENU SYSTEM***
======================================================

Use the following instructions to activate TomTom 7 with updated UK, Ireland and European maps, updated UK Speed Camera positions, and a fully working 7 digit UK Post code search on The Navigo V2 Menu System.

1)     Disconnect your Navigo from the PC then run the TomTom Software on your device by touching the “Navigation” Icon, then click on “TOMTOM”.  You will get an error message reading “Activation Failed”.  Click “Continue” then click “Voucher” you will get an “iexplore.exe” error message.  Click “OK” then turn off your Navigo.

2)    Reconnect your Navigo to the PC to access the SD card and look up your DEVICE ID from the TomTom software which can be found in the file “ttnavigator.bif” on the storage card. To do this, open the file “ttnavigator.bif” with Notepad and make a note of your Device ID which is found on the line beginning “DeviceUniqueID=”. (This should be a 10 digit code).

3)    Copy the “TTN7″ folder which can be found in the “CRACK” folder the the root of drive C:.  (This means that the address of the folder “TTN7″ should be “C:\TTN7″ on your PC).

4)    In the “TTN7″ folder right click on “Edit, Save, Open.bat” file and click Edit which will open the file in Notepad.

5)    Where it has “XXXXX-XXXXX” enter your DEVICE ID from the “ttnavigator.bif” file.  (Don’t forget the full-stop in the middle of your 10 digit code.

6)    Save the changes to the “Edit, Save, Open.bat” file and close it then double click to run it. (Ensure that the Navigo is still connected to the PC while you do this).

7)    A file called “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland-14.meta.dct” should appear in the “TTN7″ folder .

8)    Copy this file to the “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_v720.1802″ folder which can be found on the storage card

9)    Put storage card back in your PDA then run TomTom Navigator 7.  You should now have TomTom 7 running with a UK & Ireland map and full 7 digit postal search.

10)    Access the TomTom 7 Main Menu then go to > Change Preferences > Show GPS Status > click “Configure” > select “Other NMEA GPS Receiver” > set GPS Baud Rate as “38400″ > click “Done” > select “COM7″ > click “Done”

The last step configures the software to correctly access the Navigo’s GPS Receiver therefore making the software function correctly. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT: Click “No” when asked whether you want to select from voices in the same language when choosing your voice within TomTom, then scroll through to select a preinstalled voice in English, US or Australian.

Once it is running, you can add more voices by downloading them and placing the files in the “voices” folder which is located in the “mobilenavigator” folder on your SD card.  Just be sure to click “No” when asked whether you want to select from voices in the same language when choosing your voice within TomTom – This will allow you to choose ANY of the voices you have installed.

===================================================
***SETTING UP IGO 8 ON THE NAVIGO V2 MENU SYSTEM***
===================================================

1)    Switch on the Navigo, and access the Navigo V2 Menu System by clicking “Navigation”, then click on “IGO8″. (Please wait while it loads)

2)    After it has loaded, click “Settings”, then press “>” right, and click on “GPS”.

3)    Make sure “GPS Enabled” is ticked.

4)    Click on “Port” until “7″ is displayed.

5)    Click on “Baud Rate” until “38400″ is displayed.

You have now correctly configured iGo 8!

ENJOY!

I have a few things to add to this (after reading through a very informative post here) I think I have a V3, although I’m not entirely sure, it’s the one pictured at the top of this post. Anyway, with a lot of fiddling these are the additional changes you will need to make to get it to run on this model:

Open the “Menuini\menu.ini” file and search for this bit

CONXPBUTTON
x = 13
y = 10
Command = \SDMMC\mobilenavigator\mobilenavigator.exe
SizeNormal = 64
SizePushed = 64
ScaleAlpha = 100
IconNormal = \SDMMC\Icons\TomTom.ico
ScaleAlpha = 80
IconPushed = \SDMMC\Icons\TomTom.ico

And replace it with this:

ICONXPBUTTON
x = 13
y = 10
Command = \SDMMC\tomtom\mobilenavigator.exe
SizeNormal = 64
SizePushed = 64
ScaleAlpha = 100
IconNormal = \SDMMC\Icons\TomTom.ico
ScaleAlpha = 80IconPushed = \SDMMC\Icons\TomTom.ico
QuitOnExecute = yes

Next, search for this:

TEXT
x = 5
y = 63
Text =    TOMTOM
Font = Arial
Size = 18
Weight = 700
Color = 000000
FrameColor = 000000
CreateFont

TEXT
x = 3
y = 61
Text =    TOMTOM
Font = Arial
Size = 18
Weight = 700
Color = FFFFFF
FrameColor = 000000
CreateFont

And replace it with this:

TEXT
x = 5
y = 63
Text =    tomtom
Font = Arial
Size = 18
Weight = 700
Color = 000000
FrameColor = 000000
CreateFont

TEXT
x = 3
y = 61
Text =    tomtom
Font = Arial
Size = 18
Weight = 700
Color = FFFFFF
FrameColor = 000000
CreateFont

Then Navigate to the “MobileNavigator” folder and rename it to “tomtom”.

Next, create a folder on the root of the SD card called “mobilenavigator”. Now, navigate back to the root of the SD card and copy these files/folders to the new “mobilenavigator” folder you have created:

  • SysInfoSettings.ini
  • bbMENU.exe
  • MenuIni (folder)

Now, rename bbMENU.exe to “mobilenavigator.exe”

The version of iGO included in the original Navigo V2 Menu file download contained slightly older maps (EastEUMAJOR_2008.01_080229.fbl for example) and didn’t cover Kefalonia (which I needed), so using this torrent, I swapped over the entire contents of the iGO8 directory (except sys.txt) on the SD card for the newer version with the newer, fuller, maps. (Greece83TA_2009.09_091026.fbl for example) – You will however need a 4GB SD card to fit this lot on, unless you delete some other stuff of course.

So, many thanks to Daniel Schumann, badbob and Cryprix for making this possible, great work guys.

PS, if you want to edit the default menus on the Navigo, have a look here.
