Setting up the Event Notifier on HP Servers

I run PRTG Network Monitor (I’ll do a separate post on that later) to monitor all the servers, connections, services etc. This runs really well and notifies me if anything bad happens. It also has a great little iPhone app, but I don’t have an iPhone, yet.

Anyway, I really wanted to monitor all the disks in the raid arrays (Hardware Raid) on my servers, and if one went down, I wanted to be able to replace it straight away. The only option on the PTRG Network Monitor that would even come close to doing this was a custom SNMP sensor and all I needed was the OID for the raid card, or even the individual drive bays, but I just couldn’t seem to find them. I used SNMPWalk and GetIF and came close I think, but just no cigar.

I came across these OID’s, but they didn’t seem to work:

  • System Status: 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.1.3.0
  • RAID Status:1.3.6.1.4.1.232.3

    .2.2.1.1.6

So, I gave up on this (if anyone has any pointers for a P400i on a DL320S and some DL380 G5’s please let me know) and instead looked into setting up the HP Insight Event Notifier on each server (download it here - cp013067). As discussed before I use the ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) to keep my servers up to date with all the latest drivers etc. With this already done, all I had to do was install the HP Management Agents on my servers and I was away.

Once installed it’s simple a case of running through the setup and entering the SMTP server and your email address and then selecting which events you would like to be notified about. I left them all selected and as I receive emails on my phone, I’m kept up to date pretty quickly. I ran a quick test by inserting and then removing a UBS stick and within seconds I had email notifications of this in my inbox.

I can also access to System Management Hompepage on each machine on port 2381 to check the status (I can obviously use the built-in iLO also).

I see this is a fairly old post, but i was hoping there was more information.

      What were you after specifically?

Thank you, you saved me some time by convincing me to give up on the SNMP approach. Supposedly Insight Manager along with some ‘alert voodoo’ in one of those panels will enable such alerts, but it’s unreliable (to say the least).
